Let’s check out Exhibit No. 12. This exhibit contains statues of The Eighteen Arhats, with an average height of 70 centimetres. This creates a visual contrast to the statues found in Exhibit No. 9, which only have an average height of 20 centimetres.
Arhats (also known as Arahants) have eliminated all defilements and have already reached the state of Nirvana. They no longer suffer in the Samsaric cycle of birth and death. Having perfect conduct and an advanced spiritual practice, they are capable of leading all beings to liberation, and are worthy of offerings from both humans and Gods. The Eighteen Arhats forever reside in the world, protecting the True Dharma. They are derived from the traditional list of Sixteen Arhats, with an additional two found in Chinese Buddhism.
