Amituofo! Welcome to the Northern Platform of Wutai Shan Buddhist Garden in Canada, where the revered Pure Manjushri Bodhisattva is enshrined.
In Wutai Shan in Shanxi, China, the Northern Platform stands atop the five peaks, making it the highest point on Wutai Shan. However, in Wutai Shan Buddhist Garden in Canada, the Northern Platform is situated on the mountainside and cannot be the highest point. So, what sets the Northern Platform of Wutai Shan Buddhist Garden in Canada apart?
The sculptures of Manjushri Bodhisattva on the other four Platforms - Eastern, Western, Southern, and Central - all face towards the Main Hall. However, the Manjushri Bodhisattva statue on the Northern Platform is not oriented towards the Hall but faces the mountain gate.
This uniqueness lies in the fact that this Bodhisattva statue faces the sentient beings. The Manjushri Bodhisattva on the Northern Platform stands tall and looks far. Anyone passing by, be it pedestrians or vehicles on the road, before even entering the grand gate of Wutai Shan Buddhist Garden, can catch a glimpse of this Bodhisattva from afar. This signifies the Bodhisattva's role in guiding beings towards enlightenment.
Like the other four Platforms, the Pure Manjushri Bodhisattva on the Northern Platform was also donated by Venerable Miaojiang from Wutai Shan in China. The bronze statue stands at a net height of 9.99 meters, with a total height of 13 meters, adorned with a five-leaved crown. The Bodhisattva holds his hands in the gesture of Dharma teaching, a gesture of making a vow. On his sides are two lotus flowers, each holding a Prajñāpāramitā scripture, symbolizing the wisdom of all Buddhas.
The Pure Manjushri Bodhisattva on the Northern Platform is depicted as a youthful figure, wearing celestial garments and a crown with five peaks, representing the five types of wisdom of all Buddhas. He holds both the Sword of Preciousness and the Sword of Wisdom, symbolizing the severance of afflictions and delusion. Holding the scriptures signifies his wisdom. He is seated on a lion, signifying his majestic and invincible nature. The Northern Platform is associated with the Dharma of subjugation. Devotion to this aspect of Manjushri Bodhisattva can bring blessings to dispel negativity, alleviate afflictions, remove karmic obstacles, and help liberate karmic debts.
